ATTU STAYING TOGETHER

Attu’s ‘Staying Together’ is fantastically frustrated. On the instrumental front, it has all the hallmarks of celebrated liberation - ascending chords, upbeat drums, surf vibes, a chirpy lead vocal. However, once you start listening to the track, you’ll soon realise that this happy-go-lucky appearance is an act. It’s a musical brave face that tries to keep everyone blissfully ignorant to the truth that is fully shown on Attu’s lyrics. For example, the first line “who knows, how far I’m willing to go, to get under your skin” certainly hints to a relationship gone ary. Stefan Antoinette’s soft voice keeps level throughout in a temporary state of acceptance. A hint of cracks beginning to show peek through at 1.44 where suddenly Attu sounds fragile with the guitar chords open and honest. It’s a fleeting moment, but so pure. The rest of ‘Staying Together’ continues to quash this insecurity through a progressively dreamy surf-rock vibe. It’s been two years since we last heard from North London musician Attu, but we’re very happy to have his original perspective back in our lives. - HT
